When people saw Michael as a whole person instead of just focusing on his substance use disorder, he started to recognize the good within himself.
Sharing his story and building connections with others became an important part of his recovery, helping him push back against stigma and shame. Michael now works as a MAT (medications for addiction treatment) program director, living his dream and helping others who are going through similar struggles. "If I had anything to share with anybody," Michael says, "it's that you're not that person. You're not your addiction. Your substances don't rule your life." Michael learned to believe in new possibilities for himself, and now he works to make sure others don’t doubt themselves the way he once did.
