A FILM BY SHATTERPROOF AND UNSHAME CALIFORNIA

UNASHAMED

Stigma Silences. Stories Heal.

BKG_UNASHAMED_3

Let’s talk about substance use disorder.

A 15-minute documentary about substance use disorder, the people who live with it, and what happens when we choose compassion over silence.

ABOUT THE FILM

Real people. Real stories.

Unashamed follows a grieving mother, a man approaching ten years sober, and a woman breaking a cycle of generational addiction. Alongside them are the clinicians on the front lines with a clear message: recovery is real, it looks different for everyone, and no one should have to face it alone.

WHY THIS FILM

Stigma is not a personal failing. It is a barrier.

Millions of people in the U.S. are living with substance use disorder, a medical condition, not a moral failure. Yet stigma keeps people from asking for help, families from talking openly, and communities from acting with care. Unashamed exists to change that, one honest conversation at a time.

Substance use disorder is a medical condition

It can affect anyone, regardless of background, circumstance, or choices made. Quality care and recovery are possible with the right support.

Your Story Matters Too

The people in this film were willing to share theirs. If you have a story about substance use, recovery, or loss, we want to hear it. Stories like yours are how stigma gets dismantled, one conversation at a time.

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN

Unshame California

Unashamed was produced as part of Unshame California, a multi-year public health campaign contracted through the California Department of Health Care Services. Our goal is to shift how Californians think, talk, and feel about substance use disorder through storytelling, community partnerships, and honest conversation.
